Libraries across the country are recognizing the value of both board and video games in promoting literacy, problem solving, and cooperation. Just as importantly, games provide an activity the whole family can enjoy together. We will supply video games including Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii, and Rock Band: The Beatles. Our collection of board games ranges from Trivial Pursuit to Candy Land, so every family will be able to find something to suit them.

Gamers of all ages are invited to come and play; children must be accompanied by an adult.

Monday, November 2, 2009, is a good day for library folks being mentioned in the Telegraph Herald.

Adult Services Librarian Mike May made the front page article Meet your online neighbors: Bloggers feature posts about life in Dubuque. Mike's personal blog the Dubuquer highlights media references to Dubuque. You can find his blog at dubuquer.wordpress.com. Mike is also the creator of W. 11th & Bluff, Carnegie-Stout's Adult Services blog.

On page 3 of Section A, Library Board of Trustees' member David Hammer has a write up titled Have you heard? Tidbits of news from the Tri-states. Magazine profiles Dubuque attorney. Hammer, also the author of 26 books, has served on the Library Board since August 2008. The October issue of Iowa Lawyer has an article about Hammer’s legal and writing careers. His most recent book For the Record: My Name is Hammer can be checked out from the Library.

Author J. A. Fitzsimmons visited the Library last Saturday for a book signing and to give us a copy of her book Tiny Seedlings . . . their journey, which is Book One in the fantasy trilogy The Trees of Etainia:

There is a land known as Etainia. It is made up of different countries, unlike any place that has ever existed. In between great rivers, seashores, and lakes, which are miles and miles apart, are cities, towns and villages. Within these lands are unusual events waiting to happen and mysteries yet to unfold. Within these lands are mystical creatures living in hidden and undiscovered places. Within these lands are seasons with magical days and nights, where Time and Colors speak . . .

Books One starts out by introducing you to a courageous family of five tree seedlings. They will take you on a journey into a world ~ where Trees live and Trees rule.

Fitzsimmons grew up in Dubuque and has happy memories of spending time in the Library as a child—"Walking Through a Memory: Carnegie-Stout Library Impacts Young Girl." The name Stout in Carnegie-Stout Public Library commemorates Frank D. Stout who donated the land for our Library. Encyclopedia Dubuque lists his Romanesque mansion at 1105 Locust Street as another of Stout's legacies.

The people of California are also the beneficiaries of a legacy honoring Frank Stout's memory. The Frank D. Stout Memorial Park consists of 44 acres of giant redwoods located on the Smith River about ten miles north of Crescent City. "The Stout Grove is the most scenic redwood grove in existence," states Park Ranger Pete Peterson.
