What is a Challenge?

A noun. A call to take part in a contest or competition
B verb. Invite (someone) to engage in a contest.

Test your skills, knowledge, creativity and ingenuity and participate in a Maker Space Challenge.

Currently scheduled every 3 months, participants receive supplies and official rules for the challenge at the Maker Space. Challengers generally have 3 weeks to complete the project and judging or voting takes place during the last week of the month. Prized are awarded to the top finishers plus receive the honor of "master Maker".

How good are your carving skills?

Enter your pumpkin in one of the following categories: Most Creative Pumpkin, Creepiest Jack-O-Lantern and Best Use of Entire Pumpkin.


Stop by the Maker Space to pick up and Entry Form and candle. Click Here for official rules. Submit the photo of your carved pumpkin to the Maker Space email, makerspace@dubuque.lib.ia.us. We will then display your photo on the Maker Space big screen TV and on our website.

Library Patrons, friends and family can cast their vote on the Carnegie-Stout Public Library website or in person at the Maker Space for the best carved pumpkin in each category. First and second place winners in each category will receive a 3D printed Halloween design.

Can you identify the 50 states and their capitals? Extra credit for matching the state flags!

Basic Coding

Learn to program a Raspberry Pi and create a digital photo frame or weather station.


Make 3D shapes using straws!


Assemble houses, ice cream cones, pizzas and more!


Learn about electricity and create simple to complex circuits with Snap Circuts.

Paper Folding

Make a butterfly, simple note card, airplane or a shirt.


Form a specific shape using all seven shape pieces - it’s not as easy as it looks!
